The British School of Madeira opened in September 1980. It is the only bilingual Portuguese-English school in the Island which is officially recognised by the Regional Education Authority of Madeira. We are proud of our record and of the traditions we have created.
The British School of Madeira is a truly international school in terms of its pupil population – at least 16 different nationalities. It is a British School in terms of the British (Scottish) curriculum which it follows. It is bilingual in that pupils are taught to read, write, speak and understand both English and Portuguese to a bilingual level. The school is small, with around 55 pupils in total, so class sizes are small and there is great emphasis on individual attention.
Choosing a school for your child is a very important decision. It is important to verify that a school is a bona fide establishment where your child will receive a good education from fully qualified professional teachers.
This website is designed to give you an insight into what the British School of Madeira is like. You will be made very welcome if you come to visit us and you will be able to experience at first hand our happy family-type atmosphere which is combined with hard work and enthusiasm.
I look forward to the opportunity of meeting you and your family and showing you our school as well as our teachers and pupils at work.
Mrs Susan Farrow, B.Ed., M.Ed., F.R.G.S.
Headmistress
Our aims
• To provide a secure and happy environment in which children feel confident, know they are valued as individuals and are able to develop their potential through a balanced curriculum.
• To cater for the individual needs of each student, to encourage their intellectual, social, emotional and linguistic development and to foster international understanding through working together in a friendly cross-cultural environment.
• To teach pupils to work hard, enjoy play and to develop a caring attitude towards their peers as well as to think for themselves, to use their initiative and to take responsibility for their own actions.
School-home contact
School-home contact is of prime importance in a child’s development. Close contacts are maintained and it is of paramount importance for the school and home to work together.
Regular meetings are held individually with parents during the school year. In addition, parents may request a meeting with Mrs Farrow whenever they wish. A General Parents’ Meeting is also held each term.
