China Town Restaurant
‘A taste of the Orient’
For those of our visitors who enjoy good quality Chinese food there is restaurant in Madeira that is sure to satisfy your requirements. China Town Restaurant which is situated on the first floor of the Monumental Lido Shopping Centre right in the heart of the Lido area, is jointly owned by Hong Huang Ji (otherwise known locally as Julia) and her husband Wen Bin Zhou. Julia is there to welcome you whilst her husband is busy in the kitchens preparing and cooking the excellent dishes.

The décor of this expansive restaurant is as you would expect from any top class Chinese establishment. It is air-conditioned and spacious, and at the time of writing is proving so popular in the evenings that Julia sometimes has to close the doors to any would-be diners!

I chose to eat during the lunch hour when things are just that little bit calmer; my choice from the menu being the speciality of the house which is duck with pineapple. The presentation of the dish is superb with thin slices of succulent roasted duck with a crispy outer skin, placed into a scooped-out pineapple with small cubes of the same fruit over which an excellent sauce is poured.
The side dish of rice was cooked to perfection with just the right balance of varied ingredients.
The dessert of chilled Chinese Strawberries was a first for me; they are small, sweet and served in their own juices. Finishing off with an expresso coffee, my meal was excellent value for the price charged.

Taking a quick peek into the kitchen I was surprised and delighted
to see that ALL the staff are Chinese, ensuring that any meal you
have here will certainly have been cooked in a genuine ‘Mandarin’
way! The restaurant is open every day of the week from 10.30 –
15.00 and 18.00 – 23.00. Reservations are definitely recommended if
you wish to dine in the evening.

Your hostess ‘Julia’ is sure to give you a warm welcome, and the
table staff are very efficient and courteous, so remember if you
are in the Lido area, don’t walk past this restaurant, walk
in!

Please note: Since this article was written, Julia and her husband
have expanded the restaurant to the two adjoining premises
providing an additional non-smoking area. They even taken over most
of the outside terrace on the first floor. This is a true
reflection on how popular this restaurant really is!
