DID YOU KNOW?

Luisa Susana Grande de Freitas Lomelino was born in Portalegre and educated at the Colegio das Salesas, in Lisbon. She married the last local landowner of Jardim do Mar, in 1896. The couple lived in Funchal, but spent three winter months each year in the little fishing village. A law allowing divorce was formed by the new Republic in 1909, and in 1910 the couple took advantage of this to end an unhappy marriage. She stayed in Funchal and from there travelled abroad. Later she wrote evocatively of her keen observations in Jardim do Mar, during the time she spent there at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th Century. At that time it was very remote. Until recent years the only access to the village was by sea or by descending the perilous terraces. She lived and died in Funchal, after writing several books relating to the times in which she lived. She never sought fame, but Portalegre honoured her as a reputable writer, in 1973, by naming after her the principal avenue of the new District of S. Bernardo.
